Version 2014
Every couple of years I try to make some of my Oval Tambour Boxes. It is a project of love where improving technique seems to provide most of the enjoyment. This time I need to make boxes to round out my display at the upcoming shows.
This group has ushered in several significant changes from past efforts. Only one size has been made, the size that is the strongest seller. And that size was made in only three wood types, Black Walnut, Black Cherry, and Birdseye Maple. I have found these three wood types to work well in the places I go.
I have always felt that anything I make should have a function. The boxes have always been tagged with the jewelry word. I think the time is right to let the boxes achieve their own functionality as the situation calls for. Hence forth, my Oval Tambour Boxes will be positioned as a work with many uses.
Each time I make these boxes I add more finishing touches aimed at improving their appearance and collectability. Of course these enhancements always add material and time to the making. I kept solid records this time for my labor and consumed materials. The result is an eye opener. My traditional pricing methods, created in a different era, no longer applied to my present day operations.
The long standing use of blue velvet on the bottom of the box is being relaxed in favor of making thin wood bottoms. I am quite pleased with that look. I will soon know if the wood bottoms please my clients.
